C-A-M holds off Wolverines 48-41

MALVERN – Injury-plagued East Mills came up a touchdown short Friday night in a 48-42 setback to visiting Cumberland-Anita-Massena (C-A-M).

The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the shootout to put away a game that saw the two squads trade the lead throughout the night.

“It’s been a tough season,” East Mills co-head coach Kevin Schafer said. “We have some guys out and our depth just isn’t very deep.”
The Wolverines got off to a fast start, taking a 6-0 lead on the third play of the game – a 34-yard touchdown run by Chris Darnold.

C-A-M scored the next two touchdowns, a 32-yard screen pass from Thomas Hensley to Mitchell Williamson and a 13-yard run by Marcus Daugherty.

East Mills answered with a 54-yard TD run by Luke Stortenbecker and a 10-yard TD pass from Anthony Rainey to Kameron Wederquist.

A 57-yard touchdown run by Hensley late in the second quarter sent the Cougars and Wolverines into halftime tied 20-20.

Hensley teamed up with Preston Murphy on a 16-yard touchdown pass  to start the scoring in the second half, but East Mills responded with a one-yard touchdown run by Stortenbecker and two-point conversion to reclaim the lead, 28-26.

C-A-M scored first in the fourth quarter on a 50-yard pass from Hensley to Murphy, but a tackle-breaking 12-yard scoring blast by Stortenbecker and two-point conversion (also a Stortenbecker run) put the Wolverines back up 36-34.

A 55-yard, roll-out, turn-back, across-the-field pass from Hensley to Murphy put C-A-M back in front with 5:22 to play. The Cougars iced the game on a fourth-and-18 pass completion from Hensley to Nicholas Hoiste.

East Mills’ final touchdown of the night came in the final minutes of the game on a 31-yard TD pass from Rainey to Darnold.

Statistically, Stortenbecker finished the night as the game’s leading rusher with 142 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. The Wolverines rushed for 268 yards and passed for 69.

Defensively, Darnold and Stortenbecker both tallied 8.5 tackles on the night for East Mills, while Josh Drake and Matt Glockel were both credited with 7.5.

C-A-M garnered 412 yards offense – 272 in the air and 140 rushing.
Schafer said he’s optimistic his squad will respond with a strong effort in this week’s homecoming game against Woodbine.

“We told the kids this one is going to hurt this weekend, but the pain will be gone by Monday,” he said.
