Brent (Hooter) Van Houten, age 64 of Tabor
Brent (Hooter) Van Houten, age 64 of Tabor, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10 at the Tabor Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jeff Jewett and Rev. Jan Phillips officiating. Visitation was held Tuesday, March 9 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor. Interment was in Grandview Cemetery near Sidney.
Mr. Van Houten was born Jan. 26, 1946, in Sioux City, Neb., to Richard Paul Van Houten and Lessie Mae (Wheeler) Van Houten. He has been a resident treatment worker at the Glenwood Resource Center for the past 13 years, had owned and operated his own trucking company for a time, and farmed near Randolph. He was a former member of the Randolph and Tabor Volunteer Fire Departments, a Randolph City Councilman, and a Fremont County Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy.
Mr. Van Houten was preceded in death by his father, and two daughters, Angie Smith and Tawnya Van Houten. He is survived by his wife, Loa Van Houten of Tabor; five children, Chad Van Houten and wife Annie of Shenandoah; Cyndi Malcom and husband Adam of Tabor; Dawn Zaiger of Tabor; Jeff Van Houten and wife Ashley Jones of Council Bluffs; and Kristin Kates and husband Ryan of Tabor; son-in-law, Shane Smith of Sidney; 11 grandchildren, Thomas, Kaitlin, Jacob, Courtney, Lexie, Kenna, Paxten, Payten, Emma, Trinity and Baby Malcom; mother, Lessie Mae Van Houten of Red Oak; sister, Beverly Moore of Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Brad Van Houten and wife Barb; and Bryce Van Houten and wife Jackie, all of Red Oak; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will go to the Randolph and Tabor Volunteer Fire Departments. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor was in charge of arrangements.
