Blues & Brews on tap Sunday

The third annual Blues & Brews festival will take center stage Sunday in Glenwood.

The celebration of Blues music and Iowa craft beers has become an Independence Day tradition and is expected to attract hundreds of visitors to Glenwood Lake Park.

“It’s a fundraiser for the Mills County Trails System,” organizer Randy Romens said. “It’s been a success, but we couldn’t do it without the volunteers and the corporate sponsors we get. The sponsors make it possible.”

In past years, the event has taken place on the 4th of July, but because the holiday falls on a Monday in 2016, Romens said it made more sense to have the event on July 3.

Five bands from the Midwest will perform from noon to dusk, beginning with Glenwood’s own Southbend. After that, it’s the Tim Budig Band from Lincoln, Neb. (1:45 - 3 p.m.), the Des Moines Butter Cow Blues Band (3:15 - 4:30 p.m,.), Swamp Boys Blues Band from Omaha (4:45 - 6 p.m.), the Prairie Cats (6:30 - 8 p.m.), and Frank Aces Blues Band from Kansas City (8:30 - 10 p.m.).

More than a dozen Iowa-brewed craft beers will be on tap at the Iowa Craft Beer tent.

In addition to the music and craft beers, a variety of food and soft drinks will be available from local vendors.

Other features of this year’s event include an antique tractor show by the Keg Creek Antique Tractor Club, canoe rides in the lake beginning at 2 p.m., open hours at the Mills County Historical Museum and a fireworks show after the music is over (around 10:15 p.m.).

Tickets for Blues & Brews are $12 when purchased by Saturday night online at MCT-BluesandBrews.com or $15 at the gate. Children under the age of 14 will be admitted free with a paid adult admission.

Parking for the event will be at Glenwood Community High School with round-trip shuttle service provided to the park. Handicapped and motorcycle parking will available on the park’s main parking lot in front of the Mills County Historical Museum.

The main road in Glenwood Lake Park will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event.
