Blankenship heats up, makes district cut on 3A links

The Glenwood boys soccer team took advantage of the larger dimensions of the Iowa Western Community College soccer field and two first half goals to post a 3-0 victory over Council Bluffs St. Albert on Saturday.

“It's an 80 foot by 120 foot field, which is a big field, so we wanted to use it all and control the ball and I think we did that,” said Glenwood coach Mike Artist.

Glenwood (13-2 overall, 5-1 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) got its first two goals in the opening half from Joey Stivers and Trenton McNeel. Cory Simms added the Rams’ capper midway through the second half.

In all Glenwood out shot the Falcons 16-4 on goal.

“They really didn’t threaten on offense at all,” said Artist. “We controlled the game with our midfielders and our back four and (Matt) Schulz were all very consistent and confident.”

In substate pairings released on Friday Glenwood will host the winner of Perry and Atlantic on May 26 at 5 p.m.

Glenwood 6,

C.B. Abraham Lincoln 1

Glenwood blew open a 2-1 halftime game with four second half goals in a 6-1 victory over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln last Tuesday.

The Lynx scored a goal right before half when Glenwood mishandled a corner kick but it was the only mistake his team made, said Glenwood Coach Mike Artist. Six different players scored for Glenwood including fullback Josh Frederickson with his first goal of the season.

Glenwood 3,

Harlan 1

Glenwood out shot Harlan 20-2 on goal in a 3-1 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory on Thursday.

The Rams led 3-0 before the Cyclones mounted an offensive threat with eight minutes to go in the game.

“We had a little lapse on our back end and they took advantage and snuck one past (goalie Matt) Schulz,” said Glenwood coach Mike Artist.

Joey Stivers scored all three goals for Glenwood for the hat trick.

“It was good to see him get those in,” said Artist. “He’d been in a little slump lately.”
