Wolverines’ defense key to victory

Rachel Schafer’s 15 points led East Mills to a 39-30 victory over Essex in Corner Conference girls basketball last Tuesday.

The Wolverines (4-4 overall, 3-2 in the conference) used its full-court press extensively for the first time this season and grabbed 20 steals on defense for their efforts.

“Our press worked well throughout the game and forced them to play faster than they wanted to and caused them to turn the ball over,” said East Mills coach Blair Holman. “We were also very sound in our half court defense, but did get out of position a few times to give up easy buckets.”

Offensively, Holman said his team started slow – four first quarter points – but got better as the night went on.

“We started to play better and started making some shots,” Holman said.
Schafer hit 5-of-8 shots for East Mills while dishing out five assists and grabbing a career-best 10 steals.

Gracee Meyer added nine points and 11 rebounds.
