Wolverines notch walk-off district victory

Cooper Hagen led East Mills with three hits in its come-from-behind victory over Fremont-MIlls in Class 1A postseason baseball Saturday.
Gabe Blanton’s two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted East Mills to a 5-4 win over Fremont-Mills in the Class 1A, Substate 7 opening round in Lenox Saturday.
The Wolverines (10-12 overall, 8-5 in the conference) trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh when they kicked off the rally. A walk, a hit batter and a single by Ryan Sayers loaded the bases for Cooper Hagen. The junior promptly singled to score two runs to tie the game at 4-4. Two more walks loaded the bases for Blanton’s game-winner.
Sayers tossed a gem on the mound for the Wolverines, picking up his second win of the week with a complete-game victory. The senior allowed eight hits, one earned run and struck out eight.
Hagen finished his night with three hits. Fletcher Proctor added two hits and drove in a run. Jackson Embree singled and drove in a run.
Landon Baker took the loss for the Knights. The senior gave up three hits and one earned run.
The Wolverines traveled back to Lenox for Tuesday’s district semifinals. The complete results from that game will appear in the next edition of The Opinion-Tribune.
East Mills 15,
Essex 0
Ryan Sayers tossed a three-inning no hitter for East Mills in a 15-0 win over Essex Thursday in Corner Conference baseball.
Sayers struck out and did not walk a batter in the 40-pitch victory.
Caleb Urban had two hits and drove in a run. Cooper Hagen and Gabe Blanton each drove in runs.
Brody Kirchert took the loss for Essex. The freshman scattered two hits and eight earned runs.
Fremont-Mills 20,
Essex 2
Fremont-Mills used a 12-run fifth inning to pull away from Essex in 20-2 victory in Corner Conference baseball last Wednesday.
Sam Sanchez led the Knights with four hits and three RBIs. Carter Rycroft, Rhett Lemonds, Chance Carve, Broden Zimmerman and Rowen Howe added two hits each. Zimmerman drove in three runs.
Garrett Johnson went the distance on the mound for the win. The freshman allowed just one hit and two earned runs while striking out eight.
Ben King took the loss for the Trojanns.
Fremont-Mills 8,
Griswold 2
Rhett Lemonds tossed a complete-game for Fremont-Mills in an 8-2 win over Griswold in Corner Conference baseball last Tuesday.
Lemonds scattered five hits and struck out three in the victory.
Chance Carver, Rowen Howe, Lando Morse and Gavin Crom had two hits each. Howe drove in two runs.
Brayden Lockwood took the loss for the Tigers after allowing six hits and tw earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Fremont-Mills 14,
East Mills 2
Rowen Howe tossed six solid innings and Gavin Crom drove in three runs for Fremont-Mills in a 14-2 victory over East Mills in Corner Conference softball last Monday.
Howe tossed 6 1/3 innings, scattered four hits and struck out nine in the victory.
Crom was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored.
Carter Rycroft, Sam Sanchez, Landon Baker and Colin Morse added two hits each.
Caleb Urban was credited with the loss on the mound after allowing seven hits and three earned runs while fanning four.
Ryan Sayers and Jackson Embree had two hits each and Cooper Hagen singled and drove in a run for the Wolverines.
