Rams pick up Hawkeye 10 Conference road win

Glenwood’s Jenna Hopp looks for a passing angle in the Rams’ win over Atlantic Friday. Hopp scored 27 points in the win.

Neyla Nanfito hit a three pointer with just over a minute to go in the game to give Glenwood its first lead of the second half and the Rams hit four free throws down the stretch to pull out a 48-45 road victory at Atlantic Friday night.

The Rams (1-1 overall, 1-0 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) shot just 25 percent from the field, hit two of their 25 three-point attempts – including Nanfito’s big bucket – and yet still managed to out-score the Trojans (1-1) 31-20 in the second half.

“I don’t think we played really well,” said Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen. “We didn’t shoot the ball really well. They did a nice job trying to shut Jenna (Hopp) down and she certainly got her points, but she had to work extremely hard for them.”

Hopp hit 8-of-20 shots and scored a game-high 27 points, but the rest of the Rams’ lineup was 7-of-38 from the field.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball enough around her and we’ll have those nights and hopefully we’re better in the future,” Rasmussen added. “What was awesome is we found a way to win even when the shots weren’t falling.

“And we got some great (defensive) stops in the fourth quarter and the whole second half really.”

The Rams finished the night shooting 25.9 percent, but they turned it over just nine times to the Trojans’ 19 while hitting 16-of-22 at the line.

Hopp had 11 rebounds to game with her game-high scoring night and Kate Hughes chipped in nine points and two assists. Nanfito’s three was her only points of the night.

Paytn Harter led Atlantic with 25 points and 15 rebounds.

C.B. Abraham Lincoln 69,
Glenwood 57

Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln opened the game on a 13-2 run and never trailed in a 62-51 win over Glenwood last Tuesday night.

That hole and playing catch up all game proved too much to overcome.

“They’re a season team as far as kids that have varsity experience and they’re physical and aggressive,” said Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen. “They did a nice job. They were a lot for us to handle on opening night. I’d like to play them again later in the season but that’s the way the schedule goes. But we got them early and I don’t think we were as prepared for the pressure they put on us.”

Jenna Hopp hit 9-of-18 shots and Led the Rams with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Danika Arnold added 11 points and three rebounds.

Emily Pomernackas led A.L. with 15 points.
