Creston slips by Glenwood in regional duals

Creston ended Glenwood’s dual wrestling season while notched a trip to Iowa State Dual Wrestling Tournament at last Tuesday’s regional duals in Creston.

The Panthers clinched their second state dual tournament berth in the last three years in a dramatic dual that came down to the last two matches of the night. With the Rams leading 30-24 with three matches the go, Glenwood had to take a forfeit at 106 that tied the score at 30-30. Creston took control of the dual in next match when freshman Lane Travis pinned the Rams’ Hunter Codney for six points and the 36-30 lead.

In the final match of the night, Glenwood’s Vinny Mayberry scored a 2-0 win over Christian Ahrens at 120 pounds. But with Ahrens dodging the pin that would have meant six points, the three points for the victory ended Glenwood’s dual season, 36-33.

Glenwood coach Tucker Weber admitted that ending was a tough way to lose.

“This was probably the best we’ve wrestled all year,” Weber said. “The kids were into it. We had some kids avenge some losses from the previous dual. We had a couple matches that could have gone our way and switched this match around but all, in all the kids wrestled hard. I was proud of how we fought. Sometimes wins and losses don’t define you. The fight was there.”

Weber said Codney was nip-and-tuck in the 113-pound match until Travis took over late in the second period.

“He got caught in a bad situation and got pinned,” he said. “It was rough ending to the dual but we had some good matches.”

The Rams opened the regional duals with a 43-40 victory over Albia in the opener.

Vinny Mayberry (120), Matt Beem (132), Reese Fauble (145/152), Gavin Connell (182), C.J. Carter (195) and Mason Koehler (220) all won two matches on the night.

Glenwood opens its postseason at home Saturday in the Class 2A district meet. The Rams will host Atlantic, Audubon, Clarinda, Harlan, Red Oak, Shenandoah and Southwest Iowa with spots in next week’s state tournament on the line.

Weber for one is happy his is the home team.

“We’re healthy and we’ll have our full lineup and I think mentally and physically we’re ready to roll,” Weber said. “I’ve been preaching to them this is districts weeks, it’s what we’ve been working for all season. We’re going to be in front our home crowd and I think we’re up for the challenge.”

Matches begin at 10 a.m. at Glenwood Community High School.
