School Media Consultant Is District Staffer

The public relations firm hired by the Glenwood Community School District to improve its social and traditional media presence is Storyteller Communications, LLC, not Texas-based Storyteller Communications, Inc., as mistakenly reported in the Oct. 21 edition of The Opinion-Tribune. The school district clarified the hiring after the Oct. 21 article was published.
By a vote of 4-0 on Oct. 12, the Glenwood School District Board of Directors formally approved the contract with Storyteller Communications to provide public relations and communications services at a cost of $25 per hour based on 10 hours of work per week.

The firm will provide news stories and other content for local media outlets in addition to handling the district’s online presence, including its website, Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Storyteller Communications, LLC, is headed by Marietta Nelson-Bittle, currently serving as the Glenwood Community School District’s curriculum support secretary, a position she’ll hold until Dec. 1.

Nelson-Bittle has a background in journalism, having worked as a reporter and previously serving as a communications specialist in the Westside Community School district. As part of her recent duties helping to coordinate and assist Glenwood with its elementary curriculum, Nelson-Bittle also worked closely with Embray on the district’s communications and public relations needs.

“I have a lot of different skills,” Nelson-Bittle said.
The idea of Nelson-Bittle contracting as a consultant for the school district’s public relations and communications needs came about from conversations she had with Glenwood Superintendent Devin Embray.

“It was his desire and the desire of the school board to have some more dedicated resources in that area so I volunteered to do this on a consultant basis rather than having them hire an employee, which is a little more expensive,” Nelson-Bittle said. “This goes back to what I love to do and what I’m trained to do: I love to tell stories and I love to highlight the wonderful things happening in the Glenwood schools and in education in general. I have a strong desire to support public education.”

The contract with Storyteller Communications begins Dec. 1 and will run through June 30, 2016.
