Rams third, sixth at co-ed home meet

The Glenwood girls placed sixth and the boys were sixth at the 45th annual Glenwood Co-ed Invitational Cross Country Meet at Glenwood Lake Park Saturday morning.

The Ram girls finished with 76 points. Harlan was the girls champion with 40 points, followed by Atlantic with 63.
Tri-Center’s Peyton Pogge bested the field with a time of 18:38.55, more than 26 seconds better than runner up Taylor McCreedy of Atlantic, to win the individual title.

Glenwood was paced by the sixth place finish of Rachel Mullennax. The sophomore finished with a time of 20:42.62, four minutes better than her time at the meet last season.

Teammates Erin Schultz was 13th, Emma Hughes was 15th and Riley Nebel 20th to give Glenwood four runners in the top 20.

“That’s kind of the area we want to be,” Glenwood coach Dani Woodman said of her team’s four finishers among the top 20. “We always say if we can have five in the top 25, we can be competitive. We need to be better than that to beat the Harlans and the Atlantics but it’s a good starting place.”

The Rams were with our top varsity returnee Abi McIntyre who sat out the race with an injury.

Woodman said she felt her entire team “where we wanted them to or better.”

“I was happy with how we ran,” she said. “There’s always a few surprises that first meet and with having only a few varsity runners back, it was good to see where we are even with those last minute changes.”

Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson had the top two individual finishers in champion Aidan Booton and runner up Wimach Gilo to run away with the team title on the boys side. Booton finished with a time of 16:17.90, six seconds better than his teammate, Gilo. The Yellojackets tallied 52 points to runner up Atlantic’s 79.

The Glenwood boys were sixth with 158 points.

Nathan Rohrberg led the Rams with a 12th place time of 17:32.37. Sam McIntyre turned in a 17:47.37 for 16th place and Tyler Huey came in 20th with a time of 17:51.06.

Glenwood boys coach Todd Peverill said he felt like his top three runners ran very well for their first meet of the year. Rohrberg was near his personal best, McIntyre was “disappointed” with his time but ran solid, and Huey pulled a quad muscle mid-race, which slowed him down, Peverill said.

It’s Peverill’s fourth through seventh runners that are still a question mark right now.

“We have the talent there,” Peverill said. “But we have work to do. We thought we might struggle in this first one. It’s hard to tell the younger kids how to run a varsity race when they’ve never run a varsity race. But not they know they can do it and we car start working on that.”
