Rams with fifth straight

Glenwood limited Shenandoah to a season-low 34 points and won its fifth straight Hawkeye 10 Conference game in a row with a 68-34 victory on the road at Shenandoah Friday.

The Rams (10-4) held the Mustangs to 24.4 percent shooting (11-of-45) and held a dominating 36 to 22 rebounding edge.

Defensively,  Schulte said his team defended well after the first quarter after giving up 16 in the opening frame and just 18 points the rest of the game.

“Our on ball defense and communication continues to get better,” Schulte said.  “The boys also rebounded well on both ends of the floor by outrebounding the Mustangs. The boys are gaining more experience and confidence as we are going into February and district play. We  just need to keep climbing the ladder and continue to improve daily.”

Andrew Blum led Glenwood with 18 points. Nate Mohr added 17 and Christian Stanislav 14.

“Offensively, we shot the ball well,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte. “We shot nearly 50 percent  from the field and went 5-of-11 from the three point line. Our ball movement was solid and we turned down a good shot to get a great shot.”

Denison 56

Glenwood had four players score in double figures in a 70-56 win over Denison in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball Thursday.

The Rams got 18 points from Christian Stanislav, 17 from Nate Mohr, 14 from Cody Buresh and 14 from Nate Kennedy in the win.

Red Oak 63

Ice and cold may have cancelled school but the Glenwood boys basketball team were anything but in a 83-63 rout of Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball last Tuesday.

The Rams hit 10-of-14 first quarter shots, led by as many as 20 in the opening half and cruised to its third straight conference win.

“We didn’t have practice yesterday or Today and the last time I saw the kids it was Saturday when we beat Harlan so I was a little nervous,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte after the game. “We came out and kind of got on them and maintained that.”

The Rams (8-4) hit their first five shots and 10-of-14 overall in the opening frame to take a 22-10 lead into the second quarter. After building a 40-23 lead at the half, Red Oak (2-11) never got any closer over the final two quarters as Glenwood scored a season in points.

Schulte said his team’s big road wins over Council Bluffs St. Albert and Harlan served as wake up calls for his team; that momentum, he said, carried over against the Tigers, and hopefully, the rest of the season.

“We built some momentum,” Schulte said. “Even with that (Jan. 10 loss) to Atlantic we played really well except for one quarter. And then playing at Harlan and St. Albert, and getting wins at two tough places to win, and then tonight, we’re continuing to gain that momentum. Its mid-January so we want to start cranking things up and I thought we did a good job tonight.”

The Tigers’ 63 points was their second best offensive output of the season but Schulte thought his team, for the most part, did a good job running Red Oak off open shots and containing their transition game.

“The defense was good tonight. We gave up too many points, we scored 83 but gave up 63. I feel we can do better job on help side defense and identifying shooters bur for the most part, I thought our defense did a great job not just tonight but last weekend too.”

Christian Stanislav led fours Rams in double figures with 22 points. Andrew Blum added 17 and Cody Buresh 10. Nate Mohr chipped in 17 points and hit four three-pointers on the night to surpass Austin Marring on the school’s all-time three point charts with 155 in his career.

“Nate’s just a great shooter and he had a great night. He does a lot of things for us and I’m glad he’s on our side,” Schulte said.

Isaac Burt led Red Oak with 15 points. Ryan Lundgren added 11.

Glenwood 63,
Harlan 60

With leading scorer Nate Mohr limited to a season-low seven points, Christian Stanislav and Andrew Blum combined for 32 points to lead Glenwood to a 63-60 victory over Harlan in Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Jan. 14.

Stanislav led the way with 17 and Blum added 15, his final two coming at the free throw line to put the Rams up three with less than 10 seconds left in the game.

Shane Chamberlain led Harlan with 18 points.
