Rams’ Mayberry punches ticket to state wrestling

Glenwood’s Mitch Mayberry punched his ticket to this week’s Iowa State Wrestling Tournament at Saturday’s Class, District 2 meet in Atlantic.

Mayberry, one of seven Rams to qualify for the district meet, was the lone Glenwood wrestler to notch a state bid. The sophomore 182-pounder dominated Clarinda’s Jakob Childs with a third period pin in a wrestleback to earn the nod. The top two medal winners in each class advanced to this week’s state wrestling tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

“He wrestled probably the best he has all year,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “He wrestled a smart match in his wrestleback. He was 8-0 going into the third period and he ended up getting the pin. Those wrestlebacks are always fun because they’re nerve wracking. Its all or nothing on who goes to state.”

Mayberry (24-10) will face Forest City’s Reese Moore (43-3) in the Class 2A opening round Thursday in Des Moines.

“He’s from up in northern Iowa so we don’t see those teams much,” Weber said. He’s a six seed but I tell the kids the seeds don’t matter this time of year. They’re all wrestling for the same thing.”

At districts, Mayberry pinned Winterset’s Riley Hoven in the semifinals in just :44 seconds to reach the finals. In the finals, top seeded Jackson Kinsella of Creston earned a 21-4 technical fall to set up Mayberry’s wrestleback against Childs.

“He was pretty excited,” Tucker said of the sophomore. “He’s had sort of an up and down year and he’s wrestling his best right now. Hopefully his season’s not done yet and he can come out with a medal.”

Glenwood was close all day – they had three finish in third place – but just couldn’t breakthrough. Weber said he always wants more qualifiers but sometimes the match ups don’t allow it.

“Yeah we did go for 1-for-7 but I’m not sure we were favored in any of those other six,” he said. “I thought those kids wrestled well too, they just ran into some tough kids, some top ranked kids. A lot of our kids are pretty young so now they know what to work for in the future to beat those types of wrestlers.”

Tate Mayberry (138), Dalton Book (152) and Sully Woods (195) all placed third in their respective weight classes.

Mayberry defeated Clarinda’s Michael Mayer by fall to earn his medal. At 152, Dalton Book recorded a fall of Harlan’s Mason Griffith of third place. Sully Woods dropped his first two matches at 195 before bouncing back to earn a third place medal with a 5-1 decision over Devin McKay of Atlantic.

Abby McIntyre, the Rams’ first girl wrestler to reach the 2A districts, went 0-2 in her matches.

Southwest Iowa’s Colton Hauschild pinned the Rams Tyler Boldra to place fourth at 145. Ram heavyweight Noah Clark placed added a fourth finish following a loss to Harlan’s Jeremiah Davis in the third place match.

“This district was tough,” Weber said. “That other sectional we matched up with had some solid teams ranked in the top seven.”
The Iowa State Wrestling Meet opens Thursday with Class 3A matches beginning at 9 a.m. Class 2A wrestlers take the mat at 1:30 p.m. followed by Class 1A at 6 p.m.
