Rams’ Clark, Mayberry medal at CB Classic

The Glenwood wrestling team competed among 40 teams from five states at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs.

The Rams notched two top 10 individual finishes at the two-day tournament featuring some of the top teams and top wrestlers in the region.

Wrestlers were seeded into five-man pools on Friday for round robin action. The top-two wrestlers from each pool then advance to the “gold” brackets, while third and fourth place wrestlers advanced to the “silver” brackets.

The Rams’ Noah Clark and Mitch Mayberry both had strong showings at the tournament. Clark, a heavyweight, went 4-0 on day one and finished eighth in the “gold” bracket. Clark dropped via technical fall (16-0) to Liberty’s Nick Biesemeyer in the seventh place finals.

“Noah getting on  the stand was a big highlight for us,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Webber. “I always say if you can get on the podium at this tournament you’re good enough to medal at state. He worked his butt off, went undefeated that first day and battled back. I was really happy with his performance.”

Mayberry pinned Millard North’s Lucas Nigh to earn a ninth place medal at 182-pounds. Mayberry went 4-3 in the tournament.

“He just missed out on the podium but he had a good tournament,” Webber said.
The Rams’ CJ Carter won the 170-pound silver bracket and placed 17th overall.

Glenwood finished with 98 teams points. Liberty (Mo.) High School won the team title with 565.5 points.

We saw a lot of tough kids and we knew that going in,” he said. “That first day was a little rough but the second day, I thought we wrestled a lot harder and the kids did better. We’re young and inexperienced so they were in shock that first day  but we came back and battled the second day.”

Also placing for Glenwood was Tyler Boldra (30th, 152 pounds), Alex Colwell (31st, 131 pounds), Gavin Connell (30th, 132), Trey Hansen (25th, 220), Zander Hayes (26th, 160), Tyler Huey (22nd, 145), Tate Mayberry (18th, 138) and Thaine Williamson (29th, 106).

In a dual that saw a combined seven forfeits, Glenwood won five of the seven matches decided mat and earned a 64-12 victory over Plattsmouth in its first home match of the season.

“Not everyone got to wrestle in front of the home crowd,” said coach Tucker Webber. “We knew they had some open weights and kids sick. It would have been nice to get more matches but you have to deal with whoever they put on the mat. I thought we wrestled hard for the home crowd.”

Noah Clark, Alex Colwell, Tate Mayberry (138) and Tyler Huey (145) all notched pins and Dalton Book (152) picked up a 16-8 major decision victory in the win.

Glenwood tops St. Albert,
Southwest Iowa

The Glenwood wrestling team picked up its first dual wins of the season in road triangular at Harlan last Tuesday.

The Rams picked up a 61-10 win over Council Bluffs St. Albert and a 65-16 win over Southwest Iowa. Glenwood dropped a duel to the home Cyclones, 42-31.

“We limited the amount of pins in the early duals and then against Harlan, it was a great dual that came down the last couple matches and those last matches didn’t quite go our way,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Webber.

“I thought it was good for the kids to have a match like that. The score didn’t look like it, but that one came down to the last couple matches. It was a fun dual. We wrestled hard but we still have to work on getting off our backs. You get pinned seven times you’re not going to win many duals.”

The Rams’ Thaine Williamson (106 pounds), Tate Mayberry (138), Dalton Book (145), Zander Hayes (160) and Noah Clark (285) all earned three wins on the night.
