Last second shot sinks Knights in 40-37 loss

Jenna Stephens’ three-point play with 26 seconds left lifted Stanton to a 40-37 victory over Fremont-Mills in Corner Conference girls basketball Friday in Tabor.

The Knights (4-3 overall, 2-2 in the conference) had their chances after Stephens’ runner and follow up free throw but couldn’t even it up to force overtime.

“Offensively, we are really struggling,” said Fremont-Mills coach Brett Weldon. “Looking at film, we are getting quality shots but just aren’t knocking them down. Defensively we’ve played well enough to win, but we haven’t been able to take advantage on the offensive end.”

Fremont-Mills led by as many as 10 in the game before the Viqueens rallied in the second half.
Izzy Weldon and Kenna Howard scored 13 points each to pace the Knights.

Stephens finished with a game-high 21 points.

Logan-Magnolia 32,
Fremont-Mills 21

Logan-Magnolia held a struggling Fremont-Mills’ offense to just four second half points in a 32-21 victory Thursday.

The Knights actually led 17-13 at the half before the Lo-Ma clamped down on the defensive ending, out-scoring them 19-4 after halftime.

Fremont-Mills scored a season-low in points and shot a season-low 19.6 percent (9-of-46) in the loss.

Izzy Weldon led the Knights with eight points.

Greylan Hornbeck had nine to pace Logan-Magnolia.

Sidney 56,
Fremont-Mills 38

Fremont-Mills led after a quarter but couldn’t sustain the lead as Sidney rallied for a 56-38 victory in Corner Conference girls basketball.

The Knights (4-3 overall, 2-2 in the conference) had a strong opening quarter offensively, taking a 15-14 lead in the second frame but they could not sustain it as the Cowgirls out-scored them 42-23 the rest of the way.

“We played well in the first quarter but we really struggled offensively the rest of the game,” said Fremont-Mills coach Brett Weldon. “Credit to their defense.”

F-M finished 15-of-39 from the field (38.5 percent), including 1-of-10 from behind the arc, and were out-rebounded 33 to 18.

Kenna Howard and Izzy Weldon paced the Knights with 13 points each.
