Knights roll in season opener, 50-2
TABOR - Fremont-Mills scored early and often en route to a 50-2 eight-player victory over Exira - Elk Horn/Kimballton in the season opener for both squads Friday night.
Junior Seth Malcom scored four touchdowns while rushing for 267 yards to pace the potent Fremont-Mills attack.
“I think we executed very well,” Fremont-Mills head coach Jeremy Christiansen said. “For the most part, we did what we needed to do on both sides of the ball.”
Malcom scored the Knights first three touchdowns on runs of 32, 40 and 65. A 29-yard touchdown jaunt by quarterback Colton Hauschild, a 26-yard TD pass from Hauschild to Daniel Vanatta and another 65-yard blast by Malcom gave the Knights a 44-0 lead by halftime. The entire second half was played with a running clock because of the 35-point “mercy” rule.
The Spartans’ lone points of the night came early in the third quarter when Hauschild was tackled in the end zone for a safety.
The Knights answered with their final touchdown of the game – a 3-yard scoring toss from Jake Malcom to Paxten Van Houten.
The Knights finished the night with 537 yards of total offense. Hauschild completed 6-of-9 passes for 86 yards.
Vanatta was the Knights’ leading receiver, hauling in three passes for 65 yards.
Defensively, Seth Malcom recorded a team-high five tackles. Adam Perrin was in on 4.5 stops, while Hauschild and Colton Moore both tallied four. Hauschild had an interception and Chance Roof recovered a fumble for F-M.
Christiansen said he was pleased with the overall performance of his defense.
“When you do that to a team (shut them out), you’re doing some good things,” he said. “Both teams had some new faces out there. We made stops when we needed to.”
The Knights will play their first road game of the season this Friday at Audubon.
