Glenwood, We Have A Mayoral Race

Glenwood will have a contested election for mayor after all.

Ron Kohn, who spent 12 years on the Mills County Board of Supervisors, has confirmed his candidacy for mayor as a write-in candidate and will oppose Craig Florian for the job in the Nov. 7 city election. Florian is a 14-year member of the city council and is also serving as mayor pro-tem following the Sept. 30 resignation of former mayor Brian Tackett.
Florian’s name will be on the city election ballot. Kohn’s will not.

The mayor serves a two-year term in Glenwood and the position pays an annual salary of $8,125.

In addition to choosing a mayor, Glenwood residents will also elect two city council members - for Ward 3 and an at-large seat.

Joseph William George and Laurie Smithers are candidates for the Ward 3 seat. Holly Jackson and Julie Kalambokidis are running for the at-large seat.

Florian currently occupies the city council seat for Ward 2. If he’s elected mayor, the city council would appoint a replacement for the Ward 2 seat. If Kohn is elected, Florian would continue to serve on the city council with two years remaining on his current term.

Municipal elections will be taking place in cities throughout Mills County on Nov. 7 with polls open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. Ballots for early voting will be available at the Mills County Auditor’s Office beginning Monday, Oct. 16.

A public forum for Glenwood candidates seeking office is being discussed, but as of Tuesday morning a date and time had not been confirmed.
