Glenwood stays perfect in 89-41 win

RED OAK - Glenwood Coach Curt Schulte is a tough grader.

The Rams’ head coach graded his team’s performance in last Tuesday’s win over Red Oak as “7” on a 10-point scale.

Considering Glenwood opened the game on a 11-2 run, led by 34 points at the half and cruised to an 89-41 win on the road against a Hawkeye 10 Conference opponent, one might wonder why the middling grade.

“I really think we have a lot of room for improvement,” said Schulte, who is a physical education teaching when not prowling the Ram sideline. “I just really think we can do a lot better on the defensive end and witho our execution on offense. We’re doing some great things but we’re always striving for excellence.”

“Excellent” is a good way to describe the Rams’ quick start.

Class 3A, No. 4 ranked Glenwood (7-0) scored the game’s first five points, then went up 11-2 and were in control at the end of the first quarter with a 23-7 lead.

The Tigers came out defensively in a 1-2-2 zone to open the game. But the Rams, who rarely see zone, were prepared for.

“We’d seen it on film so we worked on the 1-2-2 in practice,” Schulte said. “We figured we’d probably see a bunch of it. I thought we got good ball reversals and worked the ball inside with Andrew (Blum) flashing in the openings.”

Blum scored 10 of his 12 points and Glenwood hit 4-of-9 three-pointers in the opening frame.

The Rams took a 48-14 lead into halftime and then opened the third quarter on a 11-3 run, capped by Nate Mohr’s three pointer to go up 59-17 with just under four minutes to go in the third.

“I thought we moved the ball well in the half court, we were playing unselfish and giving up the second pass and the kids don’t  care who scores as long as we score,” Schulte said.

Glenwood shot 59.6 percent from the field (37-of-62), including 12-of-28 from three point range and recorded assists on 30 of their 37 made field goals.

Schulte substituted liberally in the last quarter and a half. Twelve difference players saw the court and 11 scored at least two points, led by Mohr’s 13 points and season-high 11 assists. Andrew Blum and Christian Stanislav added 12 each and freshman Ryan Blum came off the bench to score 11.

Isaac Birt led Red Oak with 12 points.

The Rams will have six days off before returning to practice Dec. 27, Schulte said. Glenwood will next be in action Jan. 2 at home against Clarinda.
Schulte said the Holiday break is what it is, but he’d much rather see his team keep on playing.

“I’d like to keep going,” the coach said. “But it is good to get the kids some family time and it’ll be a good break for them and this is a good way to finish out 2017. We’ll get them back on the 27th, tweak some things offensively and keep working on things on the defensive end. We know coming back we have a tough stretch coming up and we want them to enjoy the break but know we have to get back to work.”
