Glenwood softball 2-1 at Atlantic tourney

Glenwood bounced back from a tough 5-3 loss in its opening game to post back-to-back wins and finish with a 2-1 record at the Atlantic Softball Invitational Saturday.

The Rams (7-2) dropped a 5-3 game to ACGC on a walk-off, three run blast by Emily Pavelka. Glenwood came back to smack 20 hits in a 8-4 win over Carroll and a 13-1, four inning win over Exira-EHK.

Bailey Rumery went the distance, striking out seven and scattering eight hits against ACGC but took the loss on one pitch that just got away from her.

“We had hit the time limit, so with international rules, they had a runner start at second base,” said Glenwood coach Kylie Stanton. “We fumble a ground ball and then its second and third with their big hitter up. I told Bailey to keep the ball down and I didn’t care if we walked her. And one just got away and we watched it fly out of the park. It was hard on Bailey.”

After the tournament opening loss, Stanton said her team benefited from a pre-game chat that seemed to calm her team and fire them up at the same time.

“We had a sit down and talked about how we didn’t come ready the first game and we were a little distracted. We talked about re-focusing on us having two more games left. And we changed up the lineup and seemed to really play well the last two games.”

Sydney Biermann earned the win in the circle over Carroll after allowing eight hits and two earned runs but it was at the plate that she made the biggest impact. The Ram sophomore belted a pair of home runs and drove in four runs.

“She’s hitting a pretty good pace now,” Stanton said. “It’s just a matter of getting her to understand we don’t always need home runs. And she’s getting there. We’re also getting girls on base in front of her also so that helps.”

Taryn Bertini, making her first varsity start, scattered four hits and fanned three in the win over Exira.

For the tournament, Biermann went 5-for-8 at the plate with three home runs and seven RBIs. Brielle Smith had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Brooklyn Taylor had five hits and drove in three runs.

Rams split H-10 double-header

The Glenwood softball split a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference games against Kuemper Catholic Thursday in Carroll.

The Rams pulled out a 7-4 victory in game one before suffering their first loss of the season in a 11-6 setback in the nightcap.

“We were not very disciplined,” said Glenwood coach Kylie Stanton. “We got out on our front foot too much, we were chasing pitches we shouldn’t have been chasing. And defensively, this team challenged us a little more by putting the ball in play. I think the girls got ahead of themselves and were thinking too much.”

Glenwood got a strong outing from Sydney Biermann in the opener. The sophomore scattered eight hits and allowed three runs while striking out nine and walking just one in the win. Biermann also helper her cause at the plate going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

“Syd is playing some good ball right now,” Stanton said. “She likes to be on the mound. She likes to be in control, which is a really good thing. She is throwing really hard, which a lot of teams don’t see and is a benefit to us. She has a ton of confidence pitching and at the plate right now.”

Brielle Smith smacked a home run among her two hits and Cameron Rounds singled twice and scored two runs.

In the capper, the Rams got up 4-1 after two innings before Kuemper staged its comeback. The Knights plated four in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth to build an 8-5 lead.

Glenwood added a run in the fifth but the Knights picked up three insurance runs in the sixth to secure the win.

Bailey Rumery scattered six hits and four earned runs to take the loss.

“Bailey didn’t throw bad. She just had a few balls float on her and didn’t break like she wanted them to,” Stanton said. “Honestly, she is a very consistent pitcher and she doesn’t walk people. She’s going to make people earn it and that’s what they did. They just kind of had her number that night.”

The Rams had a season-low five hits in the game two loss. Sara Ingoldsby led the way with a pair of hits and an RBI. Maddie Liddell, Abbie Schultz and Smith each added hits.

Glenwood 14,
C.B. Abraham Lincoln 2

Glenwood’s hot-hitting continued last Tuesday in a 14-2 victory over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in the Rams softball home opener last Tuesday.

The Rams who have out-scored opponents 68-8 this season, had trailed 2-1 after the opening inning but plated seven runs in the second and six more in the fourth to pull away. In all, Glenwood smacked 14 hits, five for extra-bases, in the four inning victory.

Sara Ingoldsby, Haley Palmer Sydney Biermann, Cameron Rounds and Brooklyn Taylor and recorded two hits. Rounds and Taylor each drove in two runs and Erin Stanley tripled two drive in two of her own.
