Glenwood scores 95 in road win

Playing its first game in eight days, the Glenwood girls basketball team brushed off any questions of rust with a season-high in points in a 95-67 victory over Red Oak Friday in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball.

The Class 4A, No. 4 ranked Rams (14-0 overall, 7-0 in the conference) did have a little sluggishness to open the game, trailing Class 2A, No. 6 ranked Tigers 31-29 at the half. But all that was erased with a few halftime adjustments but Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen and a 37 point second quarter.

The coach said he felt like  his team was ready to play but looked anxious the first two quarters.

“I didn’t feel like we played bad but Red Oak was really slowing it down,” he said. “In the second half we immediately kicked up the pace. Our pace picked up with aggressiveness on defense. We wanted to make it a track meet and that’s what we did. We scored 66 points in the second half.”

Glenwood erased that two-point halftime deficit early the third quarter and out-scored the Tigers 37-21 in the frame. They followed that up with a 29 points in the fourth quarter.

The Rams shot 48 percent for the game – 36-of-75 from the field – and grabbed 10 more rebounds than the Tigers.

“We played with a lot of intensity in the second half,” Rasmussen said. “It was good for us to see what we’re capable of. We hit all seven of our three-pointers in the second half and they came from five different players. We got to the basket and to the free throw line.”

Madison Camden led four Rams in double-figures with a career-high 30 points. The sophomore connected on 10-of-15 shots, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

Elle Scarborough added 23 points and nine rebounds while Brynlee Arnold chipped in 12 and Coryl Matheny had 11.

Ellie Rengstorf paced Red Oak with 27 points.
