Glenwood miscues prove costly in 11-1 loss

Drake Nettles fanned five and scattered four hits for Council Bluffs Lewis Central in an 11-1 victory over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Thursday.

Nettles pitched five scoreless innings before allowing a run in the sixth and giving way to closer Joel Thompson. Thompson struck out the side in the seventh.

The Titans jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 6-1 after six innings before plating five runs in the top of the seventh.

“We gave up seven walks and four errors. It’s hard to win that way,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “It puts a lot of pressure on our offense to score and we only had five hits. It put us constantly on defense and we didn’t make the plays there like we needed to.”

Offensively, Ethan Fisher, Cole Loeffelbein, A.J. Slaughter, Cade Van Ness and Jake King each had a hit for Glenwood. Loeffelbein drove in the Rams’ lone run and Fisher and Van Ness both doubled.

Slaughter took the loss on the hill after allowing three hits, four earned runs and striking six.

Sioux City Heelan 14,
Glenwood 0
Glenwood’s seven errors led to 10 unearned runs in a 14-0 loss to Sioux City Bishop Heelan in non-conference baseball last Wednesday.

The Crusaders (9-5) smacked 14 hits and drew seven walks in the five inning victory but it was the Rams’ struggles defensively that proved the most costly.

It’s a trend that had worried Ram coach Kurt Schultz for the last few games.

“At one time we were averaging five errors a game here lately and we can get away with that against some teams but against good team, you get that same number (of errors) and its hard to win them,” Schultz said. “Walks and errors are what we need to correct. It starts with throwing strikes.”

Ram starter Colton Schutte allowed six hits and three earned runs over 3 2/3 innings of work to take the loss. Pierce Harrington came on to pitch the final 1 1/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.

The Rams finished with two hits – both singles – by A.J. Slaughter and Ethan Fisher.

Glenwood 19,
Shenandoah 5

Glenwood got off to quick start with a seven run first inning and cruised to a 19-5, three inning victory over Shenandoah in Hawkey10 Conference baseball last Tuesday in Shenandoah.

A.J. Slaughter and Eli Bales both drove in four runs each and Colton Schutte knocked in three of his own as part of a Glenwood attack that smacked nine hits and drew a season-high 15 walks.

“We hit it pretty well but they gave us 15 walks,” Schultz said. “You combine our hits and the walks and that’s like having 24 hits. That’s tough for any team to come back from.”

Sophomore Michael Radford was credited with the win on the hill, scattering four hits and four earned runs over 2 1/3 innings of work.

Glenwood 13,
Clarinda 7

Mavrick Decker went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Glenwood in a 13-7 Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball victory over Clarinda last Monday.

The Rams (5-3) plated six runs in the top of the first inning only to see the Cardinals score two runs in the bottom of the frame and five more in the bottom of the second to take a 7-6 lead. But Glenwood would score seven runs over the final four innings to secure the win.

Ram starter Jake King allowed all five hits and all seven Cardinals runs – four earned – before giving way to the bullpen. Three Ram relievers combined to no-hit Clarinda over the final five innings with Ethan Fisher getting the win in relief.

Decker had three singles, stole two bases and walked once.

Cole Loeffelbein, Jake King, Eli Bales, Dax Lappala and Pierce Harrington each recorded a hit.

Kam Fulk took the loss on the hill for Clarinda.
