Glenwood caps 3-0 week with sweep of Shenandoah

The Glenwood volleyball team heeded its coaches advice, got off to a quick start and swept Shenandoah 25-11, 25-9, 25-21 in Hawkeye 10 Conference volleyball Thursday.

“We started slow against Clarinda on Tuesday and that’s something this program has struggled with,” said Glenwood coach Chelsey Harvey. “We didn’t start slow (against Shenandoah) which was good to see.”

The Rams, who improved to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference with the win, never trailed in the first two sets and Harvey substituted freely in the final set.

“I was really pleased they came out aggressive,” Harvey said. “That’s something we’ve been working on, that even teams that maybe don’t hit back, we still put it on the floor. That was our goal last night. That and we wanted to keep them under 15 points in each game and we did that the first two sets and we used our bench a little more in that third one.”

Glenwood finished with 34 kills in the match.

Joslyn Lewis led the way with 13 and Elle Scarborough added 11.

Rams sweep in triangular

Glenwood swept Atlantic and host Clarinda in a Hawkeye 10 Conference volleyball road triangular last Tuesday in Clarinda.

The Rams (11-6) defeated the host Cardinals 25-22, 25-9, 25-13 and then Atlantic 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 and on the night.

“We started a little slow against Clarinda, we weren’t really communicating or making the connections we wanted to early but we turned that our in the second and third set and show them what got, which was nice,” said Glenwood coach Chelsey Harvey.

Against the Cardinals, the Rams recorded 32 kills while hitting at a .244 efficiency. Glenwood hit .279 with 38 kills and picked up 10 aces in the win over the Trojans.

Elle Scarborough led the way with 21 kills in the two matches combined. Josyln Lewis added 20 kills and Brynlee Arnold 14.

Grace Boles dished up 22 total set assists and Kelly Embray added 29.

The Rams also had a pair of strong games at the service line, serving at .959 in the win over the Trojans and .903 against Clarinda. They also notched 19 aces.

“We’re one of the better serving teams in the conference,” Harvey said.

Lewis had nine aces in the two matches to bring her season total to 34, putting the school record of 58 well within reach.

“Our goal for her is to break that record this year and I think she can do it,” Harvey said. “It gives something else for the girls to focus on all the time besides wins.”
