Glenwood boys fall to Dallas Center-Grimes in districts

Dallas Center-Grimes turned a tight 1-0 match into a 2-0 lead just seconds before halftime and Glenwood never recovered in a 6-0 loss in the Class 2A, Substate 8 opening round last Monday.

The Rams could have matched the Hawkeyes. The game was called with 9:52 left in second half due to lightning.

“We conceded a goal in the last 30 seconds of the first half, and I believe that goal broke our spirit,” said Glenwood coach Cort Lovato. “We played well the first half. They controlled the tempo, however we were able to make some good counters and press into their third multiple times.”

The second half would tell a different story.

“It was a 180 from the first half,” Lovato said. “We had challenges stopping their runs into the box and they had many unchallenged shots that resulted in goals in the second half. The boys know they can play better and it didn’t happen tonight.”
Ram goalkeeper John Palmer  stopped 20 of 26 shots.

The loss ends the Rams’ season with a record of 6-11. Lovato said he is disappointed with the finish and an up-and-down season but he sees the season as a valuable learning experience for himself and his team.

“It was not the ending to this season I anticipated, it wasn’t the season I anticipated overall,” Lovato said. “I have some things I need to work on to get the boys playing better, being more fluid and free flowing. At times the boys are playing a step slow, and that’s on me because they are thinking about what to do next and not doing it.

“We know we have a lot to live up to being a part of this program. I have no doubt the boys will work on getting better between now and next March. I am already looking forward to next season.”
