Fast start carries Wolverines to win

East Mills jumped out to a 20-4 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 57-24 victory over Clarinda Academy in Corner Conference boys basketball Friday.

The Wolverines (2-0) got big nights from guard Michael Schafer and Mason Crouse. Schafer hit 8-of-12 shots, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, for a game-high 25 points. Crouse was 8-of-16 from the field for 21 points.

Defensively, East Mills limited the Eagles to 23.9 percent shooting (11-of-46) while grabbing 20 steals.
Robert Powell led Clarinda Academy with six points.

Michael Schafer, Nic Duysen and Mason Crouse combined for 48 points for East Mills in a 65-27 season-opening boys basketball victory over Diagonal last Monday.

The Wolverines sprinted out to a 18-9 lead after a quarter and extended their lead to 23 by halftime.

“We played well for the first game of the season,” said East Mills coach Kevin Schafer. “Happy with how we shared the ball and we had three players in double figures.  Defense was good as well and helped create some fast break opportunities for us.”

Michael Schafer led the way with 17 points and six assists. Duysen added 16 points and six rebounds and Crouse chipped in 15 points and four steals.

For the game East Mills shot 50 percent from the field (27-of-52) and grabbed 14 steals.
Kade Klommhaus paced Diagonal with 13 points.
