East Mills Service Learning Day A 'Win-Win'
Students from East Mills Middle School and High School – 220 of them – got out of the classroom last Wednesday for a valuable day of service learning.
The students, joined by 35 members of the East Mills teaching staff, maintenance employees, paraprofessionals, City of Malvern employees and park board members – spent the day cleaning and sprucing up the community.
The students’ tasks included spring cleaning at the golf course and park, trimming trees and raking leaves in residential areas, painting fire hydrants, sweeping up sand and sprucing up corner nodes on Main Street and doing some painting in the high school and Chantry Elementary buildings.
East Mills Community School District Superintendent Paul Croghan said the day was a win-win for East Mills students and the community.
“It was a very successful day teaching kids how to give back to the community that supports their education and helping others,” Croghan said. “Everyone had a good time and the weather was cooperative – a beautiful day to work.”
The students enjoyed a lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by local cattle producers.
Many Malvern and East Mills Community School District residents turned to social media to express their appreciation and support for the community service day.
