Cheryll Ross remembered for graceful presence at courthouse

Family, friends and former collegues gathered at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Monday morning to celebrate the life of former Mills County Auditor Cheryll Ross.

Ross died Oct. 17 at the age of 71 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A Newton native, Ross was elected Mills County Auditor in 1988 after working for several years in the banking business and for the Glenwood Community School District. Her election marked the first time in 40 years that a Democrat had been elected to a county courthouse position in Mills County. She would be re-elected two more times before moving on in 1999 to become the deputy auditor in Pottawattmie County, a position she held until her retirement in 2007.

Ross is remembered for her graceful presence at the county courthouse, her knowledge, leadership, positive demeanor and kindness to others.

Rev. Dan Siepker, who officiated her funeral mass, called Ross a “peacemaker.” Siepker noted that Ross held firm political beliefs and convictions, but always respected and listened to those with opposing views.

Ross was involved in numerous community organizations and gave her time to many causes, including the Holy Rosary Altar Society, American Red Cross, Glenwood Booster Club, Relay For Life and Mills County Storehouse.

She and her husband Patrick, who died in May, cherished time with their family and particularly enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s sporting and extra-curricular events.
