Casey’s to build new store in Glenwood

Casey’s General Stores has confirmed its intentions to replace its nearly 40-year-old convenience store in Glenwood with a new facility.

“We are going to be replacing that (Glenwood) site,” Casey’s Chief Financial Officer Bill Walljasper said Friday in an interview with The Opinion-Tribune. “It’s an older location that doesn’t quite serve the community the best way that it can.”

Casey’s plan is to build its new Glenwood store on the site of the former Midwest Lanes bowling center at 601 S. Locust St. Although no formal construction timeline has been established, Walljasper said preliminary work at the site would likely begin in the coming months.

“I would venture to guess that once the spring thaw comes, we’ll start progress there,” Walljasper said.

Site plans for the project have been submitted to the City of Glenwood by Schemmer and Associates - Casey’s Omaha-based engineering firm.

Glenwood Public Works Director Perry Cook said the site plans are being reviewed on behalf of the city by Steve Perry of Olmsted and Perry Consulting Engineers.

“There’s a lot of things Steve Perry will be discussing with Schemmer,” Cook said.

Glenwood Code Enforcement Officer Devan Hitchcock told members of the Glenwood City Council the Casey’s project carries a projected price tag of $6.5 million.

“It’s going to be a very attractive building,” Hitchcock said.

The building will be 4,200 to 4,400 square feet in size – considerably larger than the existing Glenwood store at 502 S. Locust St. Walljasper noted the average size of a Casey’s store in Iowa is about 2,800 square feet.

Walljasper said amenities at the new Glenwood store will include donuts, pizza, prepared foods, made-to-order submarine sandwiches, a broad selection of coffees, a sit-down dining area and a minimum of six fuel islands.

Ankeny-based Casey’s General Stores has more than 2,000 locations in 16 states, including its first Michigan store set to open later this year.
